Berries (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries)

Asked September 5, 2020, 2:38 PM EDT

I live in DC and I want to plant berries for the next season. Do you prefer a certain type of berry that is low maintenance? And what do I do in the fall to prepare the garden?

Hi- blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry are among the easier to grow small fruit crops. Test your soil now and add plant-based compost to the soil to increase the organic matter content. Blueberry will probably require the addition of sulfur to drop the soil pH to an acceptable level. Bare root plants from a reputable fruit nursery or garden center will be less expensive and easier to plant than container plants and will grow just as well or better.
