Black eyed susan

Asked September 1, 2020, 2:49 PM EDT

Hello, I know you answered this for me and said my Black eyed was a Rudbeckia Hirta, Although One has a narrow leaf and the other has a broad leaf. One gets rust one does not. Are you saying they are the same plant? Is it different depending on a sunny location verses a shady location? I love the narrow leaf cause it doesn’t get rust. Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Two different species.

The one on the left (narrower leaf) is the native species, hirta.

The one on the right with the wider leaf is probably the variety 'Goldstrum', which is notorious for disease problems, of the species Rudbeckia fulgida. It is native, too, but has become unpopular because of the disease issues. We don't recommend it.
