Cicada Killers

Asked August 31, 2020, 10:19 AM EDT

We have been inundated with cicada killers this year. We have counted at least 50 nests. What is the best way to control this infestation?

Thanks for the question. Cicada killer wasps can seem intimidating but are actually beneficial insects that control tree damaging cicadas. Drenching the soil with water, encouraging thick and tall turf and brushing out their little pile of dirt are good ways to deter them. Carbaryl dust can be used at their nest entrance.
