diatomaceous Earth, Chickens and Infestation

Asked August 29, 2020, 9:08 PM EDT

Is there any scientific evidence that proves diatomaceous earth when added to a dust bath will prevent or kill fleas, mites, ticks or lice in your backyard chickens? The respiratory dangers of DE are concerning, but are chemicals like pyrithin worse ?

I only know of one study that found a slight decrease in the number of external parasites and an increase in the number of eggs laid when using diatomaceous earth in two strains of commercial laying hens. I would probably take it's perceived effectiveness with a grain of salt though, as most diatomaceous earth results are more anecdotal than scientific.
