Can Ground cherrys Substitute for Tomatillo
Can ground cherries be substituted for tomatillo in canning recipes? I'm pretty certain that they are related but I want to double check. I know other ingredients like tomato, onion and pepper can be safely substituted in with other varieties of the same fruit in canning so long as the volume of that ingredient stays the same. I'm specifically looking at Balls' Tomatillo Salsa ( pg 37 Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving , 37th edition).

It appears that the ground cherries (also called husk tomatoes) can be substituted for tomatillos, but you may notice a different flavor from the ground cherries. Make sure you have enough of this product to ensure proper measurements. You cannot make up with another ingredient if you are lacking in the tomatillo.
