Pruning shrubs

Asked August 27, 2020, 4:43 PM EDT

When can I prune Weigela and Spirea. I didn't prune the spirea after bloom this past spring, but it is really over-grown now. The weigela has just stopped blooming, and I don't know if I should prune it now. Should I just wait until after next spring to prune, and let them be wild looking now?

Your best bet will probably be to wait until right after they bloom next spring. Do any major pruning before August to prevent new growth from coming out that could be damaged by the cold. You can cut the oldest limbs to near ground level at this time, but make sure you aren't removing more than 1/3 of the canopy during your annual pruning.
