Apple and pear fungus

Asked August 25, 2020, 12:29 PM EDT

I have enclosed a picture of two of my Granny Smith apples that have soft brown spots and peels with splotches on them. Can you tell me how best to prevent this next year. The infection affected my golden delicious apples and Bartlett pears also. My Keifer pears were not affected.
Thank you in advance.

The soft brown spots are one of the summer fruit rots either white rot, black rot or bitter rot. The splotches are sooty mold. Captan is the recommended fungicide to treat these apple diseases. The fungicide treatments should begin shortly after bloom and continue about every 14 days. Captan is not labeled for pears.

I am on vacation this week and don't have the chemical manual with me to give you the pear fungicide recommendation. If you will email me at
mark_danieley@ncsu.edu next week I can give you the pear fungicide.
