Large cracked Honeycrisp branch

Asked August 22, 2020, 3:22 PM EDT

Is there anything I can do if a large brach cracked off - 1/6 of tree? By chance, I successfully grew a 20 year old Honeycrisp tree w/o research. This year there are too many apples. There is also a black discoloration from where a small branch cracked off last year. I now know how to prune and clean the shears.

Thank you for your advise. I am a home grower with a great location, by chance.

There isn’t anything to be done. The tree has to seal the wound itself. Because the wound is on the main trunk and a year old I hesitate to recommend cleaning up the ripped wood because doing so may cause more damage. If you do try to clean it up don’t cut into healthy wood. Trees can recover from serious wounds but they usually shorten their life.
