Goldel Delicious apple tree has brown leaves, suddenly

Asked August 21, 2020, 2:49 PM EDT

Hello, I have a 3-year-old Golden Delicious apple tree which had a good year until about a week ago. I fought off the rust back in May/June, and it's looked great. Then suddenly about a week ago, many of the leaves have large brown globs and are dying. I've attached a picture. Is there anything I can do to stop this? Thanks, Dave Naden Silver Spring

Hi- this does not appear to be a pathogen. The leaf browning is probably due to environmental stressors, such as the 25+ days of 90+ degree temperature days (plus high evening temps) or the particular location in your yard. It's also possible that your tree's root system may not be large enough to support the top growth.

Keep the tree well-watered this fall during dry periods.
