converting lawn to meadow

Asked August 21, 2020, 10:23 AM EDT

I'm the Director of the Sustainability Program at the Maryland Dept of the Environment, and I received a question from a citizen asking if Maryland provides any technical assistance in converting turf grass to trees or meadows. Is this something the Cooperative Extension can help on and if not, do you have some other organizations you can recommend? This is something I'd like to be able to recommend to the businesses I work with. Thank you!

Hi - Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. We do not offer hands-on technical assistance for converting turfgrass to a meadow. However, we do have information online about the process.

If you would like to work with a landscape professional to do the design and installation work, we recommend using the directory of the Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professionals. These are professionals who have received training in using native plants for conservations landscapes (primarily for stormwater management projects). https://cblpro.org/
