Plant spacing

Asked August 19, 2020, 3:17 PM EDT

I have three 4 ft. X 3ft. Garden beds and have bush green beans, cucumber, carrot, yellow summer squash, and radish seedings to plant (2 egg carton cells of each). Can all my seedings into my boxes? What spacing do I need between the seedlings I have? I have read so many different suggestions online for spacing plants and not sure what is correct.

Thank you for your question. OSU has a great publication for the home vegetable gardener, including how close to space transplants (page 7): https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/catalog/files/project/pdf/em9027.pdf

Most new gardeners plant plants too closely together, not looking at the "mature size" information. Then plants compete for water, nutrients and sunlight, and none do well. You can always add more, but removing a plant after transplanting is typically not successful. Good l uck!
