Tomatoe plant

Asked August 18, 2020, 11:45 PM EDT

Can you please help me identify what has happened to these tomatoe plants. They were all perfectly healthy plants when they were planted

Caroline County Maryland

Hi- this appears to be growth regulator herbicide injury, either from herbicide drift (usually 2,4-D) or the presence of a persistent herbicide in an amendment added to soil (straw, compost, manure). Plants typically do not grow out of the injury to produce a crop. Tomato is extremely sensitive to these herbicides and the extreme growth of
adventitious roots along the stems (photo 1) is one of the effects.
