Hello, Thank you for your interest. For years Lilac roots and endless sprouts have come up/under the fence from our neighbor's bushes. I have manually removed all vegetation and the mat of lilac roots from a 5' X 18' area along our side of the fence. I want to keep more roots/sprouts from coming up on our side. We envision a mulched, weedless area. We won't use Roundup type chemical products. A lovely Japanese Maple tree's root system shares some of the area as well. My plan is to cover the area with a double-thickness of commercial-pro-grade weed barrier fabric. What is your opinion of our strategy? Is there another, better approach you would propose. Any installation or other tips you have will be most helpful. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, PCK

Thank you for your question. Here is an Extension article on this topic that you might consider: https://s3.wp.wsu.edu/uploads/sites/403/2015/03/landscape-fabric.pdf Because landscapes (and the legality of certain inter-neighbor interactions) differ, I would refer you to your own county extension service for assistance: http://cehumboldt.ucanr.edu/Contact_Us/Staff/ Good luck!
