Cracking bark on young dogwood tree

Asked August 12, 2020, 10:45 AM EDT

Hello: I planted this young dogwood tree last November and while it has generally been doing well I have noticed several cracks and areas of damaged bark. I am attaching several photos below. My gardeners maintain that this is not due to mechanical damage to the tree using the weed whacker but rather that this is natural splitting of the bark because the tree is growing. I am somewhat concerned as more and more of these cracks seem to be appearing. Any advice would be much appreciated! Best regards,

Your tree is beautiful and healthy looking and we don't think this is anything to worry about. It looks like those areas are where suckers (young branches) were removed.
