Crab grass

Asked August 4, 2020, 4:49 PM EDT

In previous years we have been able to pull or dig the crabgrass in this section of our front yard. This year there is just too much. What to do?? Will a pre emergent applied in the spring do the job for next summer? And how to manage it between now and then??

Here is our page on crabgrass and management information https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/crabgrass

Since you are located in Montgomery County, it is recommended that you read through the information about your county's lawn pesticide law and what you can and cannot do with regard to controlling lawn weeds in your jurisdiction. Montgomery County’s pesticide law bans the use of most synthetic pesticides, including herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides on private lawns, playgrounds, and mulched recreation areas. Organic pesticides are allowed. There are some exemptions.

Go to the following website for information regarding the law and organic lawn care information, https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/lawns/law/.

You can also contact the office directly to ask what they recommend for controlling crabgrass. Email AskDep@MontgomeryCountyMD.gov or call 240-777-0311.
