Norway maple tree

Asked July 31, 2020, 6:47 PM EDT

I have a huge Norway maple tree that drops a ton of leaves the fall. I've been spreading them around my native garden as mulch. I have heard that this tree is allelopathic. This made me wonder if using the leaves as mulch is a good idea? Also should they be added to a compost pile? Thank you!

Thank you for your question. I can find no scientific research indicating maple leaves are allelopathic. Perhaps your sources are confusing them with walnut tree tissues. Maple tree leaves provide great mulch, but using them correctly will reduce other problems: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/catalog/files/project/pdf/ec1629.pdf Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
