Gapeworm question

Asked July 29, 2020, 10:11 PM EDT

Hi! We have 7 backyard chickens. A week ago we had to put one down because it had labored breathing and was very sick. It seemed to have the symptoms of gapeworm. It gasped for air, opened its mouth wide, coughed, and shook its head. From what I have read this is contagious. I'm looking for expert advice on how and where to treat it. I have called Masserants Grain and Feed as well as Tractor Supply and neither were able to help me. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Unfortunately you can't treat for a specific disease unless you have a definitive diagnosis, and to get that you would have to send one of your dead chickens to the Michigan State Animal Diagnostic Lab.
