I would like to plant some native ferns in my yard in Dayton, Ohio. Can you tell me what varieties would winter over well? In addition, what other information should I know to take care of the plants? Should I cover them with straw over the winter? Thank you for your help. Martha Burgess

Thank you for contacting us regarding your questions. We are zone 6 in the Dayton area, so you would need ferns that are hardy to that zone or lower. Ferns typically are moisture loving with good humus in the soil, more a woodland plant, but there are a few exceptions. You will want to select the ones that best fit your garden environment. Here is a good article with a listing of ferns native to North America and conditions needed for native ferns. https://www.finegardening.com/article/hardy-native-ferns
