Deadheading during very hot weather

Asked July 27, 2020, 2:30 PM EDT

I thought I read that you should not deadhead flowers during really hot weather. Is this true or does it depend on the flowers? Thank you

Thank you for your question. I can find no research which recommends against deadheading during a heat wave, although pruning woody plants which bloom may not be advisable for other reasons. Here is an Extension article on the reasons to deadhead: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/news/should-you-deadhead-your-flowers

Here is another guide to pruning woody plants, most of which have summer blooms as well: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/default/files/documents/12281/pruningtreesshrubs.pdf

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
