raspberry worms

Asked July 20, 2020, 6:44 PM EDT

My raspberries are everbearing variety, but now they have little white worms which I suspect are Spotted wing drosophila.. I understand many things I have not done well to prevent them and will try next year. But for this year, shall I cut them to the ground now? Is there a ecologically safe insecticide? Thank you.

Thank you for your question. There are very few control mechanisms now available for this pest. Cutting down the canes will not solve the problem, but the following will help you understand the fly's life cycle, and how to prevent infestations: https://pnwhandbooks.org/insect/emerging-pest-spotted-wing-drosophila-berry-stone-fruit-pest Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

Thank you. I have set up traps and hope to spray this weekend. Maybe I will get a healthy fall crop.

You'll know to start monitoring earlier next year.
