Black spots on pear leaf

Asked July 20, 2020, 2:25 PM EDT

Hello, I have a common pear tree and recently noticed that the leaves had black spots on them. Some turned fully black and fell off the tree. Is this pear blight? Should I be cutting off all affected limbs to prevent spread? It’s on most of the trees limbs, is there a way to save the tree?

Thank you for your question. Your tree appears to have fabraea leaf spot (https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/quince-cydonia-oblonga-leaf-spot), but we have no diagnostic tools in Oregon to confirm that it is present in California. I suggest you contact your own county extension service for assistance: http://cesantacruz.ucanr.edu/contact/ Good luck!
