My buckthorn was planted in the fall two of them . Come spring they started greening up and making leaves but now one is all brown and looks dead and the other has a few green leaves. What do I do to bring them back or is this normal. I have one more at the back of my house which was planted about 3 years ago I thought had died and yet this year it is fine.

My gut feeling is transplant shock along with maybe some cold damage this spring. Here's a good publication on transplant shock:https://plantpathology.ca.uky.edu/files/ppfs-or-w-19.pdf

Please fell free to send me some pictures. It always helps. Get the base of the tree where it enters the soil, the leaves and twigs, and an overall shot.

I'll be happy to help once I get some pictures.
