Coontail Weed in Lake Emma

Asked July 13, 2020, 6:50 PM EDT

I live in Rogers City, MI and own property at Lake Emma in Bismarck Township, Presque Isle County, MI. In the last couple years coontail weed has taken hold in the lake around the DNR access site. What, if anything can be done to eradicate it before it spreads any further? Who should we contact for help?

Hello,
Thank you for using MSU Extension eXtension for your lake weed question. First know that actions at a DNR launch site require a DNR permit and approval. https://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/PR4760_EventApplication_564888_7.pdf
Coontail is super easy to net and remove from a body of water as it is mostly a floating plant. it floats to the surface in warm weather creating mats of vegetation that can become quite thick. Scooping this plant out is effective and does not require a permit. Any other approach would require an EGLE permit to manage. https://www.michigan.gov/egle/0,9429,7-135-3313_71520_24403---,00.html

I add a second qualifier that it is entirely possible that an EGLE permit is required because this is a State DNR Launch site area. I strongly urge you to contact your local DNR office to get the best guidance on this.
