What should I do to help our 4 yr. old blue spruce tree

Asked July 11, 2020, 10:35 AM EDT

I noticed small (1/2 inch typically) clumps of dead needles on this tree and one other of the 5 we have. I have taken pictures and can send them to someone as an email attachment if that is possible. I thought this may be needlecast after reading information online re: blue spruce diseases. I would just like to have confirmation and then get your advice as to how to proceed. If it is needlecast, likely the fungicide treatment I have seen described to be applied in the spring. Thank you so much for your advice.

Hello,
Thank you for contacting "Ask an Expert."
That does not appear to be needlecast. Rather, it could be spider mite? Or Rust Mite?

Might want to use a hand lens to take a closer look at the debris within the clump of dead needles.
Please let me know if it is not spider mite, and what you saw with the hand lens.
Thank you,
Julie
