Sweetgum tree leaf problem

Asked July 10, 2020, 4:46 PM EDT

My young sweetgum tree has several leaves with brown squiggles. What is this, will it hurt my tree, and do I need to do anything about it? Thanks.

This looks like leafminer damage to the foliage.
Leafminers feed on leaf tissue between the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf.
They may be the immature stages of moths (caterpillars), beetles, flies, or sawflies. They cause little damage and no control is necessary. If only a few leaves are affected you can pick off and dispose in the trash.
