Tree-like sprouts with finger thick roots all over my lawn

Asked July 9, 2020, 3:59 PM EDT

Hello, I have attached a picture of a sprout and a part of the root/runner that was underground. I have a tall tree (2 photos also attached, one of trunk and one of foliage) that an arborist told us is a cherry tree of some kind. I believe it is the tree that is dropping tiny dark red berries every fall. I can just continue to mow them down, but they are spreading all over my back yard lawn. Can you identify the plant, and can you tell me how to get rid of it? We live in Blaine between the Anoka County Airport and I-35W. Thanks, Phyl Putz

Hi,
What a nuisance! About the only thing you can do is to chop them out and remove as much of the root as possible. There is no preventative.
