Blackberry Rust, On Fruit

Asked July 9, 2020, 3:34 PM EDT

Hi, I have recently picked 15 lbs of thornless blackberries outside of Jefferson, The plants had a little rust and I noticed upon bringing them home that the berries actually had it as well. I am looking for guidance on safety for consumption. I had planned on making jam but now think frozen berries may be my only option. What do you suggest? Thank You! Jessica

The rust should not be harmful to people, either to handle or eat. Rinse them well, sort out any that are decayed or look diseased and you should be able to use them as desired. They should work for jam.
