Plant self-seeded in my yard.

Asked July 9, 2020, 2:42 PM EDT

I have a plant, actually several, with very large leaves 3ft. by 1.5 feet, shaped like an arrow, that has grown to about 7-8 feet and now has what looks like thistles seed-like growths. I have seen one in the park and elsewhere. My hunch it is a weed and I should get rid of it. Thanks.

We can't be sure without seeing the plant or sharp photos, but based on your description we think it's burdock.

Compare here and see what you think.

Most people consider burdock a weed but the root is sometimes harvested for culinary purposes.

Thanks for the info. After reading the material it very likely is burdock and I will seek to get rid of it before it flowers.
