Selecting a crabapple

Asked July 8, 2020, 6:05 PM EDT

Hello. I need to remove an old crabapple due to age and disease. I would like to replace it with a spring snow crabapple. I was wondering if this is a good tree for Michigan? Also how should I prep the soil to remove any disease from the prior tree and how long should I wait between removing the old tree and replacing it with the new tree. Thank you for your time.

Hello,

Thank you for your question. I’m attaching a guide to crabapple trees that will help you make your decision. It also provides information on care of the tree. https://www.canr.msu.edu/uploads/files/e2177.pdf

Since the old tree had been in the garden a long time, it might be wise to obtain a soil analysis to learn if amendments are needed for the new plant. To obtain a soil testing kit, go to: https://www.canr.msu.edu/resources/soil_test_kit_self-mailer.

Good luck with your tree.
