Spots on Weigela leaves

Asked July 8, 2020, 3:05 PM EDT

I have a newly planted weigela that has been losing its leaves from the base up and noticed these brown spots on the leaves. Anything I can do?

Thank you for writing.
This appears to be a fungal disease called leaf rust. I suggest that you try a copper containing fungicide (we are not allowed to suggest brand names). It will slow down further damage but will not repair the damaged leaves.
You should prune off badly diseased branches. Sterilize your pruners before and after. Put all the affected leaves and branches and leaves on the ground into a paper bag and put in trash--they have spores that can blow great distances. https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/leaf-spot-diseases-trees-and-shrubs#leaf-rusts-1156511

Great thank you so much!
