White Trunk and Main top dying

Asked July 8, 2020, 11:46 AM EDT

I believe this is a white spruce. When we moved in 6 years ago the main top was dead so I cut it off. This year the main top died as well and there is this white stuff on the truck. Is there anything I can do to salvage the tree? Should I cut off the dead branches and let the rest of it fill in?

Your pine looks to be chlorotic. They require acidic soil and if the pH is too high they are pale in color and sickly. It is treatable. The white on the trunk is sap. UMN does soil tests. The dead branches can be cut off anytime.
