Earwigs are rarely a pest in the landscape. They are attracted to moist areas, and a mulch pile is prime habitat for them.

Placing newspapers in the evening can attract them, but you will need to remove the newspaper in the morning to shake the earwigs out. An old tuna fish can with vegetable or fish oil is also a an alternative for trapping them.
