Odd growth on plant

Asked July 7, 2020, 10:30 AM EDT

I found a very strange growth in one of my cucumber plants. It's about 3" long, on the harder side, not squishy, when squeezed. It's coated in what I suspect are spores. The blossom it's butted up against is healthy but the baby cukes surrounding the spore (suspected) areas are shriveled and blackened. I can't find anything on Google and my fellow gardeners are stumped. Can you identify what this is?

Thanks for the question. It looks like you may been slimed! This looks a lot like slime mold it also seems to fit you description of the later phase of the mold. It is frequently found growing on mulch. It is really harmless to the plant thus the flower is unaffected. Slime mold is believed to be the inspiration for the 1958 movie The Blob.
