Zone 3 mn. My cherry tree was just beautiful last year with a bountiful crop. This year the young fruit is turning black and dried up and some that look like spots on them.

My initial thought is do you have cherry variety that will survive in zone 3? From your pictures we cannot determine the variety. North Star and Meteor are especially suited for Minnesota growing conditions However be aware that many parts of Minnesota are not always kind towards cherries. Here are some informational sources:

The conditions that you mentioned might be attributed to damage that occurred in the flower buds over the winter and spring. There might also be one or more fungal diseases taking place.
