Ornamental Blue Spruce Problem

Asked July 2, 2020, 3:54 PM EDT

New growth on my 25 year old Ornamental Blue Sprue has been eaten! A matching one 30' away is untouched. Please ID the problem and treatment for this. Thank you so much.

There are a number of issues that affect spruce, insects/disease or both. While we can't diagnose from this vantage point, your's does appear to be an insect problem. All spruce, especially blue spruce, have been suffering from spruce decline for years. read more here: https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/what_is_spruce_decline_and_what_should_you_do_about_it

Remember also that the problem could be both insects and disease. Best recommendation is an onsite visit by a professional, namely a Certified Arborist, one who specializes in these matters. Find one or more Certified Arborists in your zip code at www.treesaregood.org Go to the Find an Arborist tab. Arborist evaluations are not expensive and where you can learn exactly what is going on in your tree. He/she will also be qualified to treat the tree, if desired.

Needles do not often grow back so acting when decline is first seen gives the best chance of tree survival. Procrastination leads to loss of time which in turn leads to more disfigurement damage which in turn can lead to loss of the tree.

Good luck!
