Apple trees

Asked July 1, 2020, 5:24 PM EDT

I have three apple trees that the top was snapped off about 3 feet from the bottom last year. After this happened several new branches started growing from the bottom. I Zip tied two of the new branches on each tree to the old trunk. All of the new branches are sprouting from above the graft. Should I now eliminate one of the two branches on each of the trees?

It's OK to select a replacement trunk now.

Although what you hope to accomplish is worth a try, the union where the new trunk joins the old one will be weak and a break may occur there in the future.
