Poppy seed leaves on autumn blaze maple tree

Asked June 30, 2020, 11:21 AM EDT

We just had a 10+ foot autumn blaze maple tree planted in our front yard. The leaves are covered with red things that look like poppy seeds. Is this normal or is something wrong with the tree?

The red spots are galls. It is the tree's reaction to insects laying eggs on the them. It is cosmetic and does not harm the tree. Clean up all leaves as they fall. You could not have prevented this from happening. https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/insect-and-mite-galls
