Planting apples

Asked June 30, 2020, 10:55 AM EDT

What do you do when you cut an apple open and you find the seeds sprouting, do I plant the apple as is or do I take the sprouts out and plant them?

Growing apples from seed is a challenge, as they may not sprout into the same variety of apple. Most apples are planted as grafts - the scion being the part of the tree that produces fruit and the rootstock being the part that determines disease resistance, tree height, and other non-fruit characteristics.
