How often should you put mulch on the soil around your vegetables
San Mateo County California
Thank you for your question. Here is an Extension article on this topic from a nearby county: http://sonomamg.ucanr.edu/Sonoma_Gardener_Articles/Mulch--a_Gardeners_Best_Friend/ Good luck!
This is a great article. I still would like to know in a vegetable garden do you mulch once during the summer or more often
There is no "one size fits all" in answering this question. Some mulch materials break down (decompose) faster than others, and need to be replenished. Others, which are denser (think "bark chips") may not have to be renewed until next year. Like watering, there is no formula, so you'll need to keep checking your garden soil to see if moisture is being contained there (less wilt), weeds are not sprouting there, and the water you are applying, if any, is getting through to the roots. The reason that I gave you information about your county Extension office is because your growing conditions are very different than those we have here in Oregon, and they may have answers more pertinent to your soils and climate.
