uprooting and replanting mature arborvitae

Asked June 29, 2020, 9:50 AM EDT

I have to have 10 arborvitae dug up to install septic system. they are mature and healthy - about 8-10 feet tall. Will they survive if replanted or should I just get new ones?

July is not a good time to dig and replant 10' tall plants. Their root system will be reduced and they will have to grow new roots to become reestablished. With a limited root system, they will undergo stress. You will need to be careful about watering them (not too much or too little). It may be better to get new arborvitae that will still need to be carefully watered but have already been out of the ground (B and B) or have their intact root system (containers).
