This plant is Smilax rotundifolia or common greenbriar. It is a native plant in many parts of the United States. This woody vine forms dense thickets that become nesting habitat for many species but it can also have invasive qualities in a landscape. Because it forms impenetrable patches of growth, climbing over other vegetation, it is considered a weed in the garden.
