lilacs

I have 2 plants that were perfect this spring, but suddenly the leaves were wilting like they were thirsty, even though they just watered. Then they dried up and the stem started to turn black. I applied the recommended sulpher spray. It did nothing. I have one plant that looked like it was going to come back and sent out nice green shuts and soon died. Now I have a second plant doing a similar thing. Should I repot the plant or should I spray again now.

There are a couple of possibilities. The main one, because of the blackening, is bacterial blight. OSU is not recommending sulfur as a control for any of the problems. It is always best if an image can be sent. Check out this link and get back to us if it does not seem to fit.
