rose garden neglect....now what?

Asked June 25, 2020, 11:53 PM EDT

I have close to 100 roses that need clipping. How many stems should I leave, I am considering practically denudeding the bushes. Plus the weeds, make me want to cry because my rose garden work is overwhelming. I am a Master Gardener and should know better, which makes it more humiliating. Suggestions please. Thank you, Herlene in Canby

Hello Herlene,

Good to hear from you. Please take it easy on yourself for garden maintenance.

Roses are vigorous growers and you can prune then as hard as you want/need. Overall, 5-7 main canes is a good starting place. Prune out the larger, woodier canes from the base. Here is a good summary about pruning roses: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/flowers-shrubs-trees/pruning-roses

Good luck.
