Perennial Chop and Drop

Asked June 23, 2020, 3:40 PM EDT

Hello! I am creating a food forest following permaculture guidelines. I am looking a perennial woody species to create mulch on site. I have heard lead trees and moringa are good for this as nitrogen fixing trees, but they do not grow in zone 6. I would also prefer if it were a native species to Michigan or the Midwest. Do you have any recommendations?
