Spruce tree problem

Asked June 23, 2020, 1:42 PM EDT

We have a young spruce tree about 15 feet tall. The interior needles are turning brown while the needles near the end of the branches are green and there is new growth. This is the second or third year in this condition What could be causing this and is there any hope for this tree ? Hope you can help----thanks

Sometimes spruce trees shed the needles that they no longer need. However, you should examine the old needles for larvae that may be feeding on the needles. if that is happening then we can discuss how to control those. If the new growth is healthy then your tree is likely fine. I would recommend giving the tree extra water, as our previous hot and dry summers may be a reason for the needle loss.
