gummy stuff on ficus

Asked June 22, 2020, 3:59 PM EDT

We are having a problem with this ficus (?) plant. For years now all of the leaves get covered with gummy, sticky stuff that also spreads to nearby furniture and carpets and is hard to clean. Do you have any suggestions? Is this a seasonal thing? Is there any way to prevent this from happening? is there some stuff you recommend to clean it up? Thanks for your help in advance, Gretchen

The sticky, gummy residue is likely from sucking insects infesting the plant. It’s commonly called “honeydew”. Closely examine the plant to identify the culprit and we can offer control measures. Internet search images of “aphid on ficus“ and “scale on ficus” So you have ideas of what you are looking for. There could be other pests, but these are the two common ones.
