Wood rot in my porch support posts

Asked June 22, 2020, 3:45 PM EDT

This pergola was built 11 years ago (the 6x6 oak post is mounted on a 6x6 Simpson Post base, so the bottom is not in contact with the stone). It was stained once, erroneously with an indoor stain. The lumber mill that supplied it (oak) advised to leave it to age naturally. That strategy seems not to be working. It looks like water penetrated the sealant around the metal flashing. Is this fungal? Insect? Is there any treatment we could apply to arrest, or patch we can apply?

We looked at the photos. This looks like a type of wood rot or decay. It may be collecting moisture around the flashing. You may need to replace the
lumber. We recommend that you contact a contractor for more information and the best way to proceed.
