Basil root rot, fusarium, or wood stem

Asked June 22, 2020, 9:09 AM EDT

Hi I am wondering what is happening to my basil plant? I’ve noticed these brown spots forming on the stems. The leaves are not yellow and are not wilting, but do have some black spots.

Hi- the streaking of the stems is a basil fusarium wilt symptom but plants do usually yellow, wilt, and look stunted fairly early in the infection. Other root and stem rots are also possible but again, we'd expect to see leaves and stems collapsing.

It's possible the symptoms you are seeing have other causes like physical injury from the wood chips. Make sure the container is draining and that the grow mix is not saturated. If symptoms progress and wilting begins you should discard the plants and growing media.
