Spots on herbs

Asked June 21, 2020, 8:51 AM EDT

All of my herbs have whitish spots on the leaves. I see no bugs. I've attached photos. Can you tell what this is? Thanks Jean

Hi Jean - This looks like leafhopper damage on the herbs. They are a sucking insect. Typically they are gone by the time you notice the damage. Parasitoids and general predators (ants, spiders, ladybugs, lacewings) help to reduce their numbers. Keep weeds down especially perennial weeds that may harbor their eggs.

No chemical controls are recommended for this. It is okay to eat the herbs that do not have a lot of damage. Remove the badly damaged leaves and the plants should put out new growth. Here is general information about leafhoppers. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/potato-leafhopper-vegetables
