Is it bok choi raab?

Asked June 20, 2020, 6:07 PM EDT

Hi! I planted bok choi starts earlier this spring and it has now bolted - long stalks with lovely yellow flowers. I think this is raab, but I am used to raab popping up in the early spring from over-wintered plants. Is this the same thing? If so, can I eat it? Thanks for your help!

Thank you for your question. Raab is really broccoli raab: http://sonomamg.ucanr.edu/Food_Gardening/Feature_Vegetables/Rapini_Broccoli_Raab/

Bok choy is actually Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis, in the same Brassica family as broccoli raab: https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/hs1337

Since you did not attach a photo, I cannot help ID, but perhaps with this information, you can decide what you have. Good luck!
